“I just don’t think that kids should die in war.” – General Roméo Dallaire
Its heart – the mission to stop the use of children in war – is the passion and focus of General Roméo Dallaire. NATIONAL’s contribution to this honourable mission is to help the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative clearly communicate why they do what they do and how others can help (that’s the heart of what our Narrative Strategy service offering is all about).
The organization’s goal is to completely stop the use of child soldiers throughout the world. They work with militaries, police, researchers, humanitarians and experts in the field to stop the recruitment of children by adults who use them as “cannon fodder”.
Their challenge is the need to communicate a disturbing problem that many people shy away from thinking about, let alone talk about. They need to distill the complex work they do into speeches, articles and stories that clearly transmit their goals with the rest of Canada and the world.
In the spring of 2016, General Dallaire and the organization approached NATIONAL because they knew their work was vitally important to both humanity and global security. They trusted us to help them tell their story.
“War has changed. Therefore our tactics must change too. The Roméo Dallaire Child Soldier Initiative aims to work with militaries, police, policy makers, academics and humanitarians to make a long-term impact in preventing the recruitment and use of child soldiers.”
We worked with General Dallaire and his colleagues from the Child Soldier Initiative to get to the root and heart of their message. Together, we leaned heavily on NATIONAL’s Narrative and Media Relations practice areas to guide these engagements.
While our work in this area wrapped up in December 2016, we remain in awe of the work The Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative is doing and of General Dallaire’s personal bravery and fortitude in continuing to fight for humanity.
