When One Plus One Makes Three

Today is a big day for NATIONAL. We completed a transaction to acquire the business of Canada’s leading investor relations firm, Equicom, from TMX Group, making us Canada’s undisputed leader in financial communications, investor relations and capital markets communications. I’m personally thrilled, because I truly see this as a matter of one plus one making three.

Here’s why.

It’s great for our clients. Being a trusted advisor to C-Suites across Canada runs deep in NATIONAL’s DNA, and there is nothing more important to any publicly traded company than the trust it is able to earn and keep through its financial performance, public behaviour and ongoing communications of both. Our Firm adds to its already existing expertise and is now better positioned than ever to help our clients tackle their most complex financial and strategic matters.

It’s great for talent. People make the difference in our business, and we’re inheriting some very smart minds. Equicom fields a team of seasoned professionals with unparalleled knowledge of the market forces, issues and opportunities in every major sector in the economy. They will be adding their know-how to an already existing deep pool of expertise.

This deal also reunites us with Ronald Alepian, who is rejoining NATIONAL to serve as General Manager of NATIONAL Equicom. I have known Ron since 1996 as he spent eight years with NATIONAL in Montreal and Toronto from 1996 to 2004. He is a senior leader with close to two decades of consulting and executive leadership experience for global brands such as Bell, Nortel and TMX, and was most recently the Chief Communications Officer and SVP for software company CA Technologies, based in New York City. Leaders like Ron help companies grow.

Finally, it’s a win for Canadian business. NATIONAL and Equicom are both proud Canadian-born and Canadian-owned brands, rich in a history of helping clients grow across our great country. This deal bucks the trend of local agencies selling to foreign interests. It’s Canadians investing in Canada because we believe in our future and intend to make it better, together. And from where I sit, that can only be a good thing.
