On October 8th, as had been widely speculated, Nova Scotians voted to elect a Liberal majority government, led by Stephen McNeil. The Liberal Party of Nova Scotia won 33 seats; the Progressive Conservatives became the Official Opposition with 11 seats, and the New Democratic Party decreased from 24 seats to seven.
In the wake of the results, our Halifax team has put together a high level document providing background on Stephen McNeil, the dynamic surrounding a majority government, and anticipated next steps in McNeil’s transition. We have also included an overview of the Liberal Party platform and a list of newly elected MLAs.
While this brief provides initial reference points on what to expect in engaging with the new government, over the coming days and months, we will be working with our clients to analyze what the new government’s priorities mean for public policy development.
